2(two): Call for Expressions of Interest
protoPLAY are currently developing a new piece called 2(two). So far the work has been made twice with the same funamental structure but quite different aesthetic outcomes. The work is at once playfull, engaged, engaging and conceptual, and we are very keen to explore how it can be developed in the near future. To this end we’d be happy to hear from potential partners and venues who would like to consider being involved in the next phases of the projects development as a performance, installation, video-work or performance-installation. 2(two)’s new incarnations will persue new aethetics, and new media.
The underlying physical composition of the work consists of a raised platform constructed at neck-height (155cm), with holes in it for the audience to put their heads through from underneath.
Underneath, the audience can see headless bodies of other audience members. Above, their disembodied heads scatter the floor. The above space is used for performance actions; the installation of works relating to the theme of 2 (boundaries, division etc); and simply for the audience to consider the incongruity and inter-subjectivity of one another as subjective-object-heads in a disembodied space.
Ideas behind the work
We are in the process of discovering what the work can mean. To a large extent the work is influenced by the Author Daniel Dennet’s book Consciousness Explained. His analogies for the self as an Extended-Phenotype (which is part of a wider challenge to our customary conceptions of what a self is). From our point of view these ideas are also in direct decendence of protoPLAY’s work questioning the the static status/stability of a ‘finished’ art work, and the fixed notion of authorial identity (see DR, 2006).
