Interactive performance, Permanent Gallery- 90 minutes, Brighton, 2006.
Highlighting the process of group collaboration and creativity, protoPLAY engineered to make a performance/installation choosing to obtain the theme from the gallery just 96 hours before the performance. Contributing to the spirit of the work, the theme provided by The Permanent Gallery was:
“Meet a stranger, who knows neither protoPLAY nor The Permanent Gallery. This Encounter will provide the catalyst for your performance.”
Disguising all of the audience with the same mask of an unknown person and white overalls, the performance was thus articulated around the idea of ongoing encounter – where the audience could all be strangers to each other for the 90min duration of the event whist engaged in shared activities. We used a wireless camera/audio link and facilitated the audience in the gallery to invite new people from the street into the gallery to meet… who would be disguised and then invite new people and so on and so on, until the whole gallery was filled with complete strangers who hadn’t been expecting this, or even to go to a gallery that afternoon…
