Toomas Kuusing’s paintings are recollections of performances. Instances, “drawing fundamental elements from the transient“, the paintings are for the most related and depict the collective performance work by artist group Non Grata, the imagination of the painter forming a kind of post-production on the video documentation work- which is also shown as part of this exhibition.

Primarily a performance artist, Toomas uses painting to depict images and actions that couldn’t possibly be made – physically – during a live performance. His work focuses on deconstructing the performance process: whilst performing he focus on the live elements, evolution and actions, when painting, he seeks to depict a framed moment of time. His paintings are a reversal process where he can celebrate manipulations, and tame the frustration of the body’s limitation on movement and control. Frozen moments in time, they are nonetheless the development, and the celebration of these live, evolutive actions.

This is the first solo exhibition of Estonian artist Toomas Kuusing in the UK.
